What is passivation? +

Does stainless steel rust? +
Yes. Despite its name, stainless steel can rust if the passive layer is damaged, contaminated, or exposed to aggressive environments. Passivation helps restore corrosion resistance and reduce the likelihood of corrosion.
Is passivation only for new parts? +
No. Passivation is commonly performed on newly fabricated parts, but it is also used as part of preventive maintenance programs for existing equipment, piping systems, tanks, and process infrastructure.

Does passivation remove rust? +

Does passivation remove weld discoloration? +
Not always. Heavy heat tint and weld scale often require additional treatment before passivation can be effective.
Should stainless steel be passivated after welding? +

Can large piping systems be passivated? +

What is electropolishing? +
Electropolishing is an electrochemical process that removes a thin layer of metal from the surface, producing a smoother, cleaner, and more corrosion-resistant finish.
What is the difference between passivation and electropolishing? +
Passivation removes contamination and improves corrosion resistance without significantly changing the surface finish. Electropolishing removes a thin layer of material, smooths the surface, improves cleanability, and enhances corrosion resistance.
Can parts be electropolished and passivated? +
Yes. Many high-purity applications use electropolishing followed by passivation to maximize cleanliness and corrosion resistance.
Derouging Questions
What is rouge? +
Rouge is a form of iron oxide contamination that can develop on stainless steel surfaces during service, particularly in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and high-purity water systems.
What is derouging? +
Derouging is the process of removing rouge deposits from stainless steel equipment and piping systems.
Is rouge always visible? +
No. Early-stage rouge may be difficult to see and can exist as a thin oxide film before becoming visible discoloration.
Is passivation required after derouging? +
In many cases, yes. Passivation is often performed after derouging to restore the protective passive layer.

What is Cleaning for Oxygen Service (CFOS)? +
Cleaning for Oxygen Service is a specialized cleaning process that removes oils, grease, particulates, and other contaminants from equipment used in oxygen-enriched environments.
Why is oxygen service cleaning necessary? +
